Guelph bringing art to unexpected places

Local artists invited to apply for Artist in the Community program

Guelph, On, April 14, 2014 – Local artists are invited to submit applications as the City launches its first ever Artist in the Community program.

The new cultural initiative encourages artistic activity in a variety of community spaces such as municipal buildings, parks, and other community venues.

“This program is an exciting new opportunity for artists in Guelph,” says Sally Wismer, chair of the Public Art Committee. “We look forward to seeing the creative ways applicants propose to use a space in our city that isn’t generally thought of as a cultural space.”

The successful applicant will be asked to animate the outdoor space at the West End Community Centre on Imperial Road—making the space more welcoming and enjoyable. The artist will also involve the public in creative activities that explore the physical challenges and opportunities of the site as a community gathering space.

The interior spaces of the West End Community Centre already serve as an important community hub, the exterior spaces are underused. Wismer hopes the activity generated through this year’s City’s Artist in the Community program will transform the outdoor grounds into “a lively and welcoming community space.”

Emerging and established Guelph artists who work in various mediums are invited to apply for the program by May 2. The 2014 Artist in the Community will be selected by the City’s Public Art Committee in early May.

Application information is posted on the City’s website
