Guelph, ON March 12, 2014 – Since it was first established in Montreal in 2000, dance company Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie has distinguished itself through its innovative, unbridled artistic vision. One of its most recent works, Dichterliebe: The Poet’s Love, is no exception. Featuring a dancer, a pianist and a singer, this singularly unique new work will be presented at River Run Centre as part of this season’s Arbour Trails Chamber series. The show takes place on Saturday, March 29 at 8 p.m., in the Co-operators Hall.
This title work was inspired by Robert Schumann’s best-known song cycle Dichterliebe, The Poet’s Love, composed in 1840. The songs are based on the texts of German poet, Heinrich Heine. In the development of this piece, dancer and choreographer Laurence Lemieux assembled the talents of sixteen different choreographers – ranging from international stars to emerging artists and creators from other disciplines – thus creating something genuinely new. At times the pianist and singer physically interact – and react – to Lemieux, as she performs her interpretive dance. The story’s emotional journey progresses from the bliss of new love through disappointment and heartbreak to eventual recovery.
The show opens with Fantasie in C major by Robert Schumann, performed by pianist Jeanie Chung, and Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert, performed by baritone Alexander Dobson and pianist Jeanie Chung.
The Colemen Lemieux & Compagnie dance company has toured across Canada, into the United States (where they headlined the Jacob’s Pillow Festival and appeared at Fall for Dance in New York City and in several other major cities), and to Brazil, China, and Russia. They were the first modern dance company to perform in Mongolia.
