The following media release was first issued on January 25, 2014 by Guelph Police Service and the Guelph Fire Department.
On Saturday, January 25, 2014 Guelph Emergency Services, Police-Fire-EMS, were called to an engulfed structure fire at a private home on Deerpath Drive in Guelph. This fire has resulted in several persons being transported to the Guelph General Hospital with as yet undetermined injuries. This fire is under investigation by the Guelph Fire Department fire prevention officer, the Fire Marshal’s Office, assisted by the Guelph Police Service.
UPDATE at 1 p.m.
As a result of injuries sustained in this fire, five persons were taken to the Guelph General Hospital for treatment. One of the persons taken to hospital has succumbed to injuries received. Pending completion of notification of next of kin, no further details on the deceased will be released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Guelph Fire Department, the Ontario Fire Marshal assisted by the Guelph Police Service, and no further information will be made available until the conclusion of the investigation.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has completed the investigation at the scene. A formal determination of the cause of the fire will require some time as the investigation is completed.
Smoke alarms in this residence were functional, and alerted the residents to the danger in the home. Damage to the home is estimated at approximately $350,000. Four occupants of the home were able to exit the home, and a fifth occupant was rescued by the Guelph Fire Department responding crew.
Salim ALIDINA, 59 years of age, was transported to the Guelph General Hospital after being rescued by members of the Guelph Fire Department. He was treated for injuries received in this fire, and was later pronounced deceased. Our sympathies are extended to members of the family at this difficult time.
