Songstress Martha Wainwright makes solo stop at River Run

Guelph, ON, October 3, 2013 – Singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright is slated to take the stage at River Run Centre on Sunday, October 20 at 8pm. Known for her hugely expressive voice, confessional lyrics, and self-deprecating style, Wainwright will perform works from her impressive arsenal of powerful songs, including tunes from her most recent release, Come Home to Mama.

Wainwright was born into folk music royalty. Her father, Loudon Wainwright III is a prolific American composer. Her late mother, Kate McGarrigle, was one half of the McGarrigle Sisters, a Quebecois folk duo, who achieved icon status in Canadian culture. Older brother Rufus Wainwright – for whom Martha worked as a back-up vocalist – has become an internationally revered performer.  In recent years, however, Martha has stepped out from the shadow of her legendary family and earned the spotlight herself.  Her vocal prowess and powerful lyrics combined with her formidable stage presence have firmly established her as an artist in her own right.

The album Come Home to Mama reflects on themes of motherhood, love and loss, joy and anger. It was recorded on the heels of the winter of 2010 when, in the span of a few months, Wainwright gave birth to her first child, and lost her mother Kate to cancer. “This record is a culmination of my life experiences so far,” Wainwright explains. “Everything changed for me a couple of years ago and this record is a representation of a return to the reason I started writing songs. I’ve made this record as a motherless child and as a mother – two things I had never been before. For me, it is a new beginning.”

Describing one of Wainwright’s recent solo performances in the United Kingdom, The Huffington Post wrote: “Martha’s distinctive, throaty, passionate vocals and characteristic, knee-jerky dancing were all on display, but she remained as moving as ever.”
