Guelph, ON, October 15, 2013 – In Jesse Cook’s hands, the acoustic guitar was escorted from the musical fringes of folk fests and coffee shops to the top of the pop charts. The Torontonian guitar virtuoso makes a stop at Guelph’s River Run Centre on Sunday, October 27, as part of his Blue Guitar Sessions tour. The Main Stage show begins at 8pm. The tour supports his latest release, an album by the same name.
The Blue Guitar Sessions album marks something of a departure for Cook, known for his complicated, note-filled, flamenco-inspired style. Emboldened in part by UK artist Adele’s work, Cook chose to explore bluer moods on this album, and use sparser arrangements. It’s by no means a standard 12 bar blues record, but it is a new exploration in sound for Cook. The record features covers of torch song standards like ‘I Put a Spell On You’ and Jacques Brel’s ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’.
“It’s a big departure from the work I have done in the past,” Cook admitted to writer Paul Gains. “And there’s a fear that if you do something drastically different, will there still be someone there to listen to you if you change? But I feel the role of an artist is to change, to constantly push forward and try to come up with something new. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life repeating my first few records so I decided I was going to do it.”
To date, both The Blue Guitar Sessions album and tour have been receiving rave reviews. At the live shows familiar songs from Cook’s past recordings are intermixed with tracks from his latest release. Joining him on stage is his band comprised of Chris Church, Rosendo Leon, Nicholas Hernandez and Dennis Mohammed, as well as other guest artists.
