Heat alert issued for city of Guelph

Keep cool at air-conditioned City facilities and libraries

Guelph, On, September 9, 2013 – Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has issued a heat alert for tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, for Wellington, Dufferin, and Guelph.

Environment Canada is predicting the hot and humid weather to last until Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Guelph reminds residents that air-conditioned City facilities and libraries are open to residents and visitors looking for a place to keep cool during the heat alert. Families can also cool off at one of our indoor pools or ice rinks.

Visit guelph.ca/coolingcentres for a list of locations and hours City facilities are open during a heat alert.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health advises people to do the following during a heat alert:

  • Stay out of the sun
  • Drink lots of water
  • Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
  • Stay in air-conditioned places

Seniors and young children are particularly at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are okay, especially isolated adults and seniors, who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses.

Look for the Blue W decal on business windows in Guelph—including restaurants, City facilities and businesses—to fill your reusable bottle with healthy, safe municipal tap water, free-of-charge as part of the Blue W program. Visit bluew.org for a list of participating locations.
