Residents asked to choose blue, grey cart sizes by May 31

About 15,000 more Guelph homes to receive waste carts this fall

Guelph, On, May 1, 2013 – Residents scheduled to receive waste carts this year are asked to provide their preferred size of blue (recyclables) and grey (garbage) carts to the City by May 31.

“Using carts instead of plastic bags; sorting organics, recyclables and waste carefully; and processing our organic material locally are all part of a concerted effort to reduce the amount of waste Guelph sends to landfill,” said Dean Wyman, General Manager of the City’s Solid Waste Resources department.

The City will deliver three waste carts—a green 80-litre organics cart, a blue 360-litre recyclables cart and a 240-litre grey garbage cart—and a food scraps container for kitchen use to approximately 15,000 homes this fall.

Residents at these addresses may select an alternative size of blue cart and grey cart from four size options to best meet their household’s needs. Alternative size selections are required by May 31 and can be submitted online at guelph.ca/waste, by telephone at 519-767-0598 or dropped off at select City facilities. Additional details will be provided in a brochure about the waste cart program, delivered to affected homes starting the first week of May.

The City is phasing in the waste cart program over three years—2012 to 2014—to keep costs affordable. A map identifying the neighbourhoods in each phase is available at guelph.ca/waste. Alternatively, residents can call the City’s Solid Waste Resources department at 519-767-0598.

All four sizes of carts are on display at City Hall, Evergreen Seniors Community Centre, Guelph Public Library Main and Westminster Square branches, Victoria Road Recreation Centre and the West End Community Centre. Size selection forms can be dropped off at these locations.
