Guelph, On, April 11, 2013 – By the time he takes to the Main Stage at Guelph’s River Run Centre on Friday, April 26 at 8:00 p.m., Canadian troubadour Royal Wood may be adding “Juno Award Winner” to his official biography. The singer and songwriter’s We Were Born to Glory is nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. If he wins, it will be yet another accolade for the Canadian artist who has dominated CBC Radio Charts, earned Top Pop Single Picks on iTunes, and is a finalist for the 2013 International Songwriting Competition.

Wood’s lyrics weave a tapestry of love, loss and life, drawing comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Tom Waits. His songs have become go-to soundtrack material for television producers, and can be heard on episodes of hit series like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and This is Wonderland. Wood is also co-writing new works with high profile artists, such as Randy Bachman and Colin James.

While Wood’s music is thoroughly contemporary, as an artist he is something of a throwback: a handsome crooner, dapper dresser, with an understated coolness. He has made a name for himself as a cabaret-style performer; however his latest album – with its strong rhythms – has a decidedly more rock edge to it. Critics are unanimous in their praise for We Were Born to Glory. “The snappy 13 song collection of pop-rock numbers feels brasher and brighter than any of his previous five efforts,” said reviewer Sandra Sperounes of The Ottawa Citizen. “…it’s a bolder move away from his noir-lush jazz pop that put him on the radar of Toronto’s music scene a decade back,” writes Imran Khan of Pop Matters. “No matter what musical element he is in, Royal Wood imparts his songwriting with the same qualities evocative of his name: luster and class.”
