Letter to residents – Organic Waste Processing Facility action plan

Friday, December 23, 2011

Dear Resident,

RE: Organic Waste Processing Facility draft action plan

The City wishes to apologize for the recent unpleasant odours and assure you we are taking action to address the situation at the Organic Waste Processing Facility.

The City stopped receiving organic waste on November 25 to enable the facility’s designer, Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd., to develop an action plan.

The draft action plan was reviewed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and the City’s consultant before it was presented to the citizens’ Organic Waste Processing Facility Public Liaison Committee on December 19 for review. With input from this committee, the action plan will be finalized and Maple Reinders will begin implementing long-term solutions.

The draft action plan contains several recommendations to manage and minimize odours at the City’s organic waste facility. The recommendations include making improvements to the facility’s air containment and odour management systems.

The City has posted the draft action plan and supporting information on its website to help keep you informed. New information on what the City is doing to address odour complaints will be posted on guelph.ca as it becomes available.

You may also contact the City’s Solid Waste Resources at 519-767-0598 or waste@guelph.ca if you have additional questions or want more information.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as the City works with Maple Reinders and other partners to address the odour complaints and to ensure our new organic waste facility operates as designed.

Sincerely,

Janet Laird
